I'm a left-leaning liberal, which should mean that I have a great deal in common with Socialists and Anarcho-Syndicalists, but actually I find them tiresome. It seems that once people start marching under a flag - any flag - cheap gainsaying rhetoric quickly supplants principle. In my opinion, these groups are largely driven by a "joiner" mentality - members are far more interested in "belonging" than they are in the principles upon which the group is supposedly founded, so individuals will compromise whatever personal beliefs they have in order to continue to be accepted. As a consequence, the group as a whole is inclined to avoid confronting internal differences that might lead to rifts by obsessing unhealthily on differentiating itself from other groups, and ostracizing any members who question the party line. These are essentially both sides of the same coin of militant orthodoxy - the only way such groups can survive is by being aggressively anti whatever you've got.
