Someone with an apparent anti street art agenda has recently defaced some well known works on walls in St David St and Young St. ‘Rejecting sanitised culture‘, one of my favourite works, has been painted over with the word ‘wall’ in white paint, presumably with a roller.

Works on Young St near the southern side of Johnston St have also been painted over with white paint, and the Night Cat mural also has some minor damage.

Does anyone know who is responsible for this vandalism or what their agenda is? Is it idiots? Rival artists? Anti-graffiti lobbyists? As the work by Ghostpatrol and others on the corner of St David St and Napier St was supposed to be a legal commission, I would be extremely angry if I was the property owner.

Sad to notice the damage to Ghostpatrol and pals mural today. What kind of roller-wielding idiot would slap such dull whiteness over brilliant art? No respect…

I’m starting to suspect that there is something new going on in the local graf scene. A ‘Simz’ work on a wall just off Johnston St Collingwood has been tagged over by ‘Tres’ (some examples of his/her work here), this vandalism happened over the weekend, and generally there seems to be more tags being put over superior ‘works of art’. Are rival graffitisti running around deliberately messing up each other’s work?

I live near this house. Since WALL was put up there has been consistent new tags on the wall over the white space. This wall had not been touched for a long time and now its just looking terrible. Would be happy if someone ( ie. Ghostpatrol ) came along and made it nice again.

For work on a private wall the artist needs permission from the owner, the owner needs permission from the council, and the owner needs to pay the artist… if it was simple every wall would be covered in art.

i was renting at 242 napier street (ie. st david street mural wall place), and gave ghostpatrol et al permission to collaborate on a mural. in retrospect, it would have been more wise (and maybe less diplomatic) to just have ghostpatrol & miso do the whole thing, as some of their other murals look great…and consistent.
i didn’t bother asking council as i figured the wall looked pretty crap with tags anyway, and the mural would be a ‘community service’ to the streetscape, as well as giving street artists a welcome canvas.
there were mixed reactions from the neighbours after it was freshly completed, with some old greek dude calling it an “eyesore”. whatever…at least it’s not white washed with bright blue downpipes like his dump of a place.
anyway, i never had trouble with council or police following the project, and it seemed most of the neighbourhood & tourists really enjoyed it.
seeing the place is just a rental, and the landlord is very relaxed about it (he lives in adelaide & as long as the rent is flowing in, he hasn’t got a worry in the world), so i would say to ghostpatrol & miso to return to the wall & give it a makeover. oh yeah, and btw, i never actually paid either of them. they were just happy to get their work on a wall!

I’d like to see a wiki or forum or something similar where properties seeking art, like yours, could be listed so artists seeking spaces can find them and make contact.
