Fitzroyalty

Hyperlocal news about Melbourne's first suburb: Fitzroy 3065

does this count as a park?

I’ve been documenting the tiny parks and public open spaces in Fitzroy. This is perhaps the smallest of them all. It’s merely a narrow strip of Greeves St on the corner of Young St. Does it even count as a park? If not, what do you call it?

  1. The Japanese would call it a ‘pocket park’.

  2. The strip of garden and lawn is a pocket park and has recently been improved with plantings by the council-employed gardeners. If the Yarra Council bought the vacant block next door in Young Street, the park could double in size.

Most days there are people sitting on the benches, enjoying the sun, eating their lunch, drinking coffee, etc. The absence of noisy traffic makes it a lovely spot to stop.

    • It is a lovely spot! I have stopped and sat on that bench several times to watch the world go by…

  3. There’s a similar one in North Brighton and it’s called a “reserve”.

  4. I always think of a ‘reserve’ as something much more expansive.

  5. this is most definitely a park. i’ve had serious discussions about ‘where this relationship is going’ and smoked a joint there. on separate occasions. and i’ve had a picnic there, come to think of it. yep, i think those are the qualifiers.

  6. ‘Pocket Park’ sits pretty well with me. I’m the gardener who has recently planted some succulents and aridity tolerant species in an attempt to show the masses that one can have quite an attractive garden that will not only tolerate our current climate, (including our brutal last summer!) but thrive in it. Watch this space…

  7. I like Mim’s way of ranking a park. That makes the tiny King park a special place for me :-)
