‘Jesus the Arrogant – an indie rock musical’ opens tonight at the (Newtown) Workers Club

Posted in Brunswick St, Fitzroy, Gertrude St, theatre on June 30th, 2009

I spotted this last night as I walked by. ‘Jesus the Arrogant – an indie rock musical’ opens tonight at the (Newtown) Workers Club on the corner of Brunswick St and Gertrude St. It amuses me to note that the venue is now being described as the ‘Workers Club’ without ‘Newtown’, although the signage has not been changed. The decision to name the venue the ‘Newtown Workers Club’ did not work as it confused people who knew the Newtown name because of the Newtown Social Club cafe.

dinner at the North Fitzroy Arms

Posted in North Fitzroy, Rae St, business, customer service, food on June 30th, 2009

On a cold winter evening a walk north in the brisk air gives me a great appetite for hearty winter food. I enjoyed a fantastic dinner recently at the Haskins restaurant in the North Fitzroy Arms, which was positively reviewed recently by Words and Flavours and Sarah Cooks. My friend chose the risotto with kangaroo and beetroot and I had the veal scaloppine with gnocchi and spinach. It was nourishing and very satisfying!

the living dead

The legal dispute rant on Johnston St continues to amuse me. The offended party keeps posting rants and the building’s owners keep removing them. Recently some cool street art was added that seemed oddly appropriate.

breakfast at Kerynia cafe on Smith St

Posted in Collingwood, Smith St, business, coffee, customer service, food on June 29th, 2009

It took me a while to notice that the Smith St Canteen had closed and the premises had morphed into the Kerynia cafe. I stopped in for breakfast solo on a recent Saturday morning and was most impressed by what I discovered. Like Siyia further south on Smith St, Kerynia has a Greek and Cypriot influenced menu with meat based and vegetarian hot lunches changing daily and a few delicious breakfasts on offer.

This is the Kerynia breakfast with wonderfully creamy scrambled eggs, tomato with oregano, haloumi, spinach, mushrooms and some tender fried meat morsels (I can’t remember what it’s called). $13 of pure breakfast pleasure.
