Hyperlocal news about Melbourne's first suburb: Fitzroy 3065

this cafe and bar may or may not be called Felice

I recently wrote a post about a new cafe being created in the space formerly occupied by 20th Century Pieces. I stopped by on Saturday to see if it was open. The answer is yes, sort of. The friendly owner Felice welcomed me in and I met members of his family and some of his friends including Steve from Handsome Steve’s House of Refreshment. I enjoyed a delicious short macchiato that I was not allowed to pay for despite my protestations.

An official opening date has not been set, and an outdoor sign has not yet been made because a final decision on the name has also not been made. I learned how hard it is to source the letters to use on traditional menu boards (they’re available somewhere in Richmond) and watched it being constructed.

The fit out is elegant and understated, with dark wood furniture, a polished concrete floor and an upholstered booth at the back. The huge model aeroplane hanging from the ceiling has been there since it was 20th Century Pieces.

There’s going to be a regular table football competition. I doubt my blind luck will get me far compared to genuine skill, but I’m willing to try.

The license allows only for daytime trading at present, but they are applying to council to obtain an evening license.

The space and ambience are simply gorgeous – even the sugar bowls are beautiful.

As a biker I appreciated seeing the gear on the clothes stand in the corner, and an AGV Valentino Rossi replica helmet sat on another shelf (I have one too).

I’m looking forward to visiting again soon. I expect it will quickly become popular because it feels right and the coffee is fasntastic.

  1. Just curious, when you take pictures of cafes and restaurants, do you tell them it’s for Fitzroyalty? I would think you would get a few odd stares when you start photographing your meals.

    • In this instance I did ask and explained what I do, as they were not properly open, so apart from Handsome Steve I was the only customer there. Normally I like to be completely anonymous, not tell anyone who I am, just eat my meal and take some pics and often I’m not the only one in the room at the time doing so. The stares are not so common now because so many people are doing it! If I tell people who I am they tend to offer me free drinks etc (like Felice did) and I want to discourage that. I try to be independent. I can’t ethically accept free food or drink then write a bad review. I want to be honest and to do that I have to be unbiased.

  2. Thanks for the pointer – popped in today for a solid espresso. We’ve just moved into our new studio space around the corner and will be regular visitors to Felice I’m sure.

  3. Was reading ThreeThousand today and noticed they had an entry on Felice’s with a very familiar looking picture. ;)

    • Thanks Neil. I have just left a terse message for the parasite at 3000, Penny Modra, who used my image without permission. She previously asked for and was given permission to use my photo of Rice Queen in 3000. I do not automatically give permission to commercial sites to use my work. I publish under a NON-COMMERCIAL creative commonse licence.
