About Fitzroyalty

Fitzroyalty - hyperlocal news and reviews about Melbourne’s first suburb: Fitzroy 3065 - is a local news and reviews site for Fitzroy residents and visitors. Read the about and hyperlocal pages for more information.

It features stories on the suburb of Fitzroy in Melbourne, Australia, and reflections on life from a socially libertarian, economically socialist, culturally anarchistic and radically individualistic point of view.

"I hate almost everything you write yet I cannot look away. You’re better than [Andrew] Bolt." User comment.

dinner at Houndstooth on Johnston St

It’s been a long time since my last dinner at Houndstooth on Johnston St and I was pleased to return recently for dinner with a friend who had not been there before to find that it still serves fantastic food at implausibly low prices. My friend chose 3 courses for $20 and I chose all 4 for $25. How do they do it? I started with the appetiser of white anchovies with orange zest. What an amazing combination! You can get white anchovies across the road at Casa Iberica.

For entrees we had the soup and the prawn skewer, and both were delicious.

For mains we had the yellow jacket fish and the beef osso bucco. The fish was sweet and succulent and the beef rich and tender. Both come with rice.

Desserts were the lemon tart and the pecan tart. We tried guessing where they are sourced from and thought Babka on Brunswick St and Brownes on Lygon St are the likely suppliers. Whoever does the baking, we love your work!

The last review of Houndstooth was by Fiona from Words and Flavours last year, and I want to remind diners that Houndstooth is one of the best places to eat in Fitzroy. It does something that is unique in the area, provides great food and has a good selection of wines available by the glass.

It’s not open on weekends, so make it a dinner destination on a night when you get home from work and can’t be bothered cooking. You’ll have a much more enjoyable evening by taking a walk down Johnston St to Houndstooth than by ordering  takeaway for about the same amount of money.
