Northern Exposure on High St Northcote
On the evening of Friday 19 June I was out and about with thousands of others exploring the galleries and shops along High St in Northcote for the Northern Exposure art festival (a tip for the web designers – test your site in different browsers. It looks shite in Firefox). I quickly realised that I was not really in the mood for art, or maybe it was not to my taste. I was more interested in people watching and mooching around.

The best piece I saw was in the window of Punch (above). The most amusing was the audience generated wine glass installation at one gallery (below).

The most crowded venue was the rooftop gallery at the town hall (above). The evening started with fire dancing and loud poetry outside the church (below).

The south facing balcony of the town hall has a wonderful view of the city (below).

My friend got tipsy on the free wine (good stuff from Innocent Bystander) and as we wandered our focus changed from seeking good art (elusive) to good food (almost impossible). Every place we tried was either full or holding tables for bookings. We eventually got the last table at I Saluti, generic pizza and pasta place.

It did not look promising as the waiting staff seemed too busy to take our order and the menu was too skippy for my liking (‘potato dumplings’ instead of ‘gnocchi’). I was pleasantly surprised to find that the ‘potato dumplings’ with prosciutto, tomato and creamy sage sauce were really good. Dinner proved to be the best part of the evening.

Quick question. Was the use of photography authorised within the gallery? Wouldn’t want any unauthorised adaptations in breech of the copyright act going on. You need to be respectful about reproducing other peoples work. :)

You mean in relation to the top photo? That was taken from the footpath through the window without flash. I made and published these images to report on and review the event so I am covered by fair dealings over and above what is already allowed. See the Australian Copyright Council Handout on Artworks (289kb PDF): “You may draw, paint, photograph or film a sculpture or work of artistic craftsmanship which is publicly displayed “other than temporarily” without permission from the copyright owner.”
