The Last Tuesday Society – Jagged Little Pill edition at Yah Yah’s

The Last Tuesday Society’s ‘Jagged Little Pill edition‘ show on 30 June at Yah Yah’s on Smith St was a triumph. It was full to bursting and the Alanis Morissette theme was hilarious. I organised a group of friends to attend including Kat Black and Jasper Cook of VJzoo. Jasper is a great photographer and each time I see him he has some impressive new gear. The photos are all his, are used here with his permission, and the entire set can be viewed on Flickr. The finale of the show was an anarchic singalong with The Suitcase Royale.

Poet Laureate Telia Nevile is becoming a favourite of mine – I really enjoy her whimsical, melancholic delivery and clever word play.

Eva Johansen has an amazing operatic voice that the audience is not prepared for, and her sulky Russian princess character was popular with the audience.

Aurora Murphy’s performance induced near silence from the enthusiastic audience. Whereas all the other acts were consistently silly, frivolous and simply entertaining, Murphy’s was confronting and clashed with the rest of the acts. She has a great voice and undoubted stage presence, but my group felt that using vegemite to simulate menstrual blood, which she smeared on her face, was a bit undergraduate.

Zoey Dawson’s spoken word performance was subtle and effective.

The List Operators were a last minute (and not theme related) inclusion but were hilarious.

The Last Tuesday Society is taking a break for a while as various acts prepare for the Fringe Festival. They’ll be back later in the year.
