Fitzroy history – Nicholson St bombing in 1898
My new favourite online historical resource is the archive of the Victorian Government Gazette hosted by the State Library of Victoria. You can search it and by using ‘Fitzroy’ as a keyword I have found many fascinating stories. In Gazette 54, Friday, June 10th 1898 (download full issue – 3mb PDF) is a curious story about a bomb exploding on the balcony of 144 Nicholson St.

Entirely by coincidence! I wrote this last week, and imagined mining workers hoarding explosives at home, getting drunk on the balcony one night and having an accident…
