the population of Fitzroy
This graph shows the rise, fall and recent rise again in the population of Fitzroy (and North Fitzroy, as for most of its life, from 1858-1994, the City of Fitzroy was one political and statistical area). It peaked at almost 35,000 in the 1920s and crashed after world war II, when suburbia drew people away from the city and the slums were demolished to allow for the construction of the high rise housing estates. In the past fifteen years the population has started to rise again as the conversion of factories and warehouses into apartments has created more living space and gentrification has created more demand for inner city living. The population figures are from ABS census data.
