Fitzroy history – brush factory on the corner of Victoria and Young streets

I love the illustration for the Gibaud & Sons brush manufacturing business that was located on the corner of Victoria St and Young St. The factory looks enormous! It is disingenuous as the people are far smaller in scale than the building. It makes for good commercial propaganda. Back in the day it was important to be seen belching fumes into the atmosphere, so an active chimney was a status symbol. The Picture Victoria sites says that Gibaud & Sons were established in London in 1862 and came to Victoria in 1876.

The factory itself still stands and is the offices of several businesses. A visit to the site shows a rather more modest sized building.
