Fitzroy history – the doomed art deco warehouse
Update 3 December 2009: according to Melbourne Heritage Watch, this building was demolished yesterday…
According to the Art Deco society, this building began as the engine house for the cable tram that ran up Brunswick St and St George’s Rd from Victoria Parade to Holden St from the 1886 until its final trip in 1930. It received a moderne makeover in 1936 when it was converted into a wine warehouse. A nomination to protect the building by adding it to the Victorian Heritage Register was rejected and it seems likely to be demolished and replaced with a multistorey building.

We are losing too much of our history and heritage through damn developers and govt ministers with poor taste, poor judgment and piss poor ability to listen to the public.

Hi Brian
Your update beat me to it – I was on that corner yesterday and the back of this building has been demolished, though it did look like the front was still intact.
I hope the facade is kept, it has such lovely art deco features – though I recognise ‘modern’ developments don’t always work that way.
I’m glad you took a photograph of this (this series of old and new is wonderful!), as I’m sure a photograph from the same place in a year or two will be completely different.
