Hyperlocal news about Melbourne's first suburb: Fitzroy 3065

Fitzroy history – Wood v Roy

I’m not interested in football so, apart from sarcasm, it is not a topic you’ll read about here. I’m making an exception for this charming postcard c1906 depicting a game between Fitzroy and Collingwood. I’m not sure why the Collingwood players have moustaches while the Fitzroy players are clean shaven – is it a subtle signifier of identity?

lunch at the Johnston St Spanish Fiesta 2009

Last Saturday afternoon (before the rain) was the best time to be at the Johnston St Spanish Fiesta. The cooler weather meant it was busy, but as not overwhelmingly crowded as last year, and there was lots of delicious food to sample (from top down): taquitos from Los Amates, sweetcorn hotcakes with salsa and coriander yoghurt, empañada de queso and picarones. Mmmmm, everything was fried. There’s another good food review at Food stuff Melb.…

imitation is not the sincerest form of flattery

I am curious about the future of media and am exploring this by participating in it, by publishing a hyperlocal news sites and involving myself in online communities. I’ve tried to create something new and unique with Fitzroyalty and the ongoing interest in it suggests that people find it useful and entertaining. I find it rewarding to publish my site, and I appreciate all the feedback I receive and all the friends and contacts I have made in the Melbourne social media / citizen journalism scene.…

when it rains and shines it’s just a state of mind

Despite the heavy rain that began falling soon after I got in from having lunch at the Johnston St Spanish Fiesta (review forthcoming) on Saturday afternoon, the event was not ruined. I went out again at night to see what was happening and lots of people were out enjoying the crazy conditions. All the bars, restaurants and clubs were full, with people lining up to get into the Johnston and the Laundry.

breakfast at Beans and Bagels on Johnston St

I often chose not to publish a review if my experience is poor but occasionally I find it worthwhile to do so to see what other people think. On a recent Sunday I had breakfast at Beans and Bagels with a friend. It was only my second visit there in several years, as my first experience had been underwhelming due to the terrible coffee I was served. I wanted to try them again mainly because I love bagels.…

Fitzroy history – the doomed art deco warehouse

Update 3 December 2009: according to Melbourne Heritage Watch, this building was demolished yesterday…

According to the Art Deco society, this building began as the engine house for the cable tram that ran up Brunswick St and St George’s Rd from Victoria Parade to Holden St from the 1886 until its final trip in 1930. It received a moderne makeover in 1936 when it was converted into a wine warehouse. A nomination to protect the building by adding it to the Victorian Heritage Register was rejected and it seems likely to be demolished and replaced with a multistorey building.…
