dinner at North East China Family on Flinders Lane

North East China Family has been on my list of places to try all year, since I read the Melbourne Gastronome review back in January. More recently, Doublecooked was not quite as enthusiastic, but my mind was made up. Just as I made plans to be out in the city one evening, which would coincide nicely with dinner, It pleases us published their review and a few days later I proceeded to order almost the same spread as them. I’m now converted: I’ll be back and now have no need to overrule my hesitation about cleanliness at Camy to eat good dumplings.

Eggplant (above) used as a vessel to carry the largest amount of the most intense garlic paste I have ever eaten. It burned! It was so good but I could not finish it. The best salt and pepper squid I have had in a long time (below).

Just came back from a disappointing lunch there. The services were huge, but the steamed dumplings were too doughey. And they couldn’t rustle up some Chinese broccoli for us.

There was no broccoli on the menu when I was there either – I wonder whether it is not on the menu because it is not common to the north east?
