beer and pizza at Deco bar, St George’s Rd North Fitzroy
Deco Bar on St George’s Rd is one of my favourite places. After attending the manic RMIT printmaking exhibition at the nearby Red gallery recently, Deco was the prefect place to relax in and recover from the crush of people at the show. Like the arrangement at other bars and food business, such as Joe’s Shoe Store and Pizza Meine Liebe on High St in Northcote, Deco has an arrangement whereby you can order pizza from Red Olive next door and enjoy it in the bar with the splendid variety of drinks they serve. I discovered Austria’s Gösser dark beer at Deco soon after moving to Melbourne, and it’s always a pleasure to return.
Somewhat like I Saluti on High St, Red Olive appears generic and suburban compared to more fashionable neighbours, and I’ve never been motivated to eat there. I’ve acknowledged before that food bloggers are inconsistent, even fickle, in the places we choose to review and those we overlook. I’m guilty of this behaviour though I am consciously trying to overcome it by researching who gets reviewed and who doesn’t and deliberately visiting places no one else has reviewed.
The reward for being the first to report on something new or previously ignored is significant in terms of personal satisfaction and professional reputation. Based on the quality of the pizzas, I think Red Olive has been unfairly overlooked by food bloggers, presumably because of its bland interior design. Red Olive pizza is seriously good.
From the top down: Italian sausage, lamb and fetta, and funghi, spinach and basil. All were good but the funghi was extrordinary, with a degree of mushroomyness that far exceeded the number of mushrooms on the pizza. It must have had something extra, like truffle oil (I must admit I scanned the menu briefly, saw sausage pizza, and ordered that without further thought). My friends agreed and we emptied the plates.
