Blackhearts and Sparrows opens in North Fitzroy
Blackhearts and Sparrows, rather like Bottega Tasca at 321 Lygon Street, Carlton (which specialises in European varieties like tempranillo and sangiovese from Australian and international producers), is my kind of wine shop. It carries many different varieties, so those of us sick of generic shiraz and cabernet sauvignon can find Australian and imported monastrell, barbera and other delights. While the selection at Piedimontes is way above average for a supermarket, if you want something more distinctive Blackhearts and Sparrows on Scotchmer St is the place to go.

There’s been one in Brunswick East for an eternity.

I just dropped in yesterday for a look and was pleased to find they also stock a great range of interesting beers – probably (unless there’s somewhere else I’ve forgotten about) the best range in Fitzroy… plenty of local microbreweries plus imports from the UK, Belgium, Germany, New Zealand, the usual suspects. They should mention this out front, as well as the wine!
Plus I noticed Dench has broken through the wall to next-door and more than doubled their seating space!
Good times on Scotchmer Street.
