About Fitzroyalty

Fitzroyalty - hyperlocal news and reviews about Melbourne’s first suburb: Fitzroy 3065 - is a local news site for Fitzroy residents and visitors. Read the about and hyperlocal pages for more information.

It features stories on the suburb of Fitzroy in Melbourne, Australia, and reflections on life from a socially libertarian, economically socialist, culturally anarchistic and radically individualistic point of view.

"I hate almost everything you write yet I cannot look away. You’re better than [Andrew] Bolt." User comment.

at last, Fitzroy is promised a new public toilet

The City of Yarra is clueless when it comes to spending our money. It wastes thousands of dollars to pay business lobby groups and historical societies to build shit websites, but fails to meet its promises to build public toilets.

Instead it comes up with ridiculous plans to outsource the provision of public toilet facilities to private businesses. It’s curious that we have heard nothing further about this. I suspect, as I predicted, that it has been a complete failure.

Fortunately, the former plans to build public toilets appear to have been revised. In February 2009 the council announced in its PDF newsletter that the corner of Westgarth St and Brunswick St may be a location for a new public toilet. The newsletter also listed the corner of Michael St and Queens Parade as another possible location.

In a fantastic example of web editing, a page hidden in the roads section that previously explained the toilets has been edited to only talk about one proposed toilet on the corner of Michael St and Queens Parade. The page says that ‘If Council decides to proceed with the proposed toilet, it is expected that it will be installed in the 2011/2012 financial year.’ That’s a long time to wait.

The proposed toilet on the the corner of Westgarth St and Brunswick St may jump the queue. The council is seeking public feedback on this proposal, which may be built this year. The consulation page says ‘If Council decides to proceed with the proposed toilet, it is expected that preparatory construction works would occur in about May 2010, and that the toilet would be installed in August / September 2010.’ About time!
