dinner at Mamanee Thai, Smith St Collingwood

In another food blogger recommendation challenge, Ed from Tomatom and I had dinner last month at Mamanee Thai on Smith St Collingwood, based on Ed’s experience of ordering takeaway from there and my reading of positive reviews from Hookturns and Mel: Hot or Not. They’re all right – Mamanee is excellent! Ed and I crunched our way through fat spring rolls, papaya salad and deep fried fish and devoured tender pork and vegetables. They’re BYO and there’s plenty of places to buy drinks nearby, so if you arrive without knowing that (as I did), then it’s an easy situation to correct.

They’re also open for lunch, but only on Wednesday through Friday if memory serves me right.

Great to catch up. I especially loved the deep fried fish and need to go back for more.

Thanks for the shoutout, glad it was up to scratch! We love the pad thai at Mamanee and the penang beef curry, try it next time.

LOVE their papaya salad — so full of lemons and chillies and peanuts. The second half of the menu (I think it’s labelled “specialities” or “south thai specialities” or something) has all the best stuff — unfortunately, very little of it is available for take-away, though.

Apparently that blackboard up the back that’s all in Thai are the real specials not there for the round-eyes, so if you know a Thai speaker, bring them down to translate.

Hmm, ok, am now officially declaring myself a round eye advertising for a Thai speaker who wants to have dinner with me sometime so I can try the secret specials!

According to one Urban Spoon review (http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/71/1464418/restaurant/Melbourne/Mamanee-Thai-Collingwood#reviews):

“They even have dishes not on the english menu that the Thais from that area can order. My Thai friend was with us and he ordered a fish stomach curry…”
