Fitzroy market to open 6 February 2010
After more than a year of planning, scheduling, council issues, resident complaints and an appearance at VCAT, the organisers of the forthcoming Fitzroy market have finally won their case and will hold the first market on Saturday 6 February 2010 at the Fitzroy Primary School on Napier St, Fitzroy.

The market will then be held on the first Saturday of every month (except April which will be the second Saturday), from 10am – 2pm. For stall holders the costs are $50 per stall or $75 for food stalls. There will be trash and treasure, fruit and veg, craft, art and yummy food – a bit of everything!

I’ve got to say that the market was a bit of a disappointment, but it might get better in the future.

Both of the market dates have been a real disappointment. For what they’re trying to sell there’s better and cheaper stuff in Brunswick and Smith Street shops, but without having to pay an entry fee to get in! It seems like a bad idea poorly executed.

And there’s too many markets. I think the one at the Workers Club was quicker to open. The difficulties the outdoor market had in getting planning approval (which took over a year) meant many people had lost enthusiasm for it before it began. A shame because it was a good idea in late 2008.
