beef with orange for dinner at North East China Family
I’ve eaten at North East China Family on Flinders Lane before, and loved it, so was eager to return. When I did so with a friend we were both in an adventurous mood and so we ordered a dish purely out of curiosity – beef with orange. We loved it! It is thin beef strips in a thick savoury sauce that has lots of thin strips of orange rind in it. The orange flavour is strong but it’s not very sweet.

We started with excellent fried dumplings, and also ordered the Thailand noodles, which we discovered are egg noodles with seafood, chicken and vegetables (below). Good, but not amazing. Beef with orange was the outstanding dish of the meal!

I went to North East China Family and really didn’t think much of it. And having a look at the photo of beef in orange, there is waaaay too much sauce in the stir-fry.
However, lots of people seem to disagree with my review as it’s still packing them in lunchtimes.

This dish is a braise or stew, not a stir-fry, so it seemed to have the right consistency to me!

When weather permits, I’ll be trying to replicate that dish…Involving lots of research @ NECF, of course!
