London holiday – the best cafes in Soho
You can eat well in Soho if you want to spend serious money at fancy tapas places. Eating well on a budget comparable to comfortable living in Melbourne, and finding good coffee, is possible but requires some research and luck. On my first morning there I had a fantastic coffee and toasted ham, cheese and tomato croissant at Fernandez & Wells coffee bar (below).

Equally fabulous is the Nordic Bakery, which has very good coffee and simple cafe food like smoked salmon open sandwiches and Finnish cinnamon buns (below). Be warned, it may look light and fluffy like a croissant, but it is not! The pastry is thick and heavy, and it is incredibly filling. Strongly spiced with cinnamon and cardamon, and seeping a thick syrup, it is also very delicious.

Another cafe I really liked was Milk bar (below), which is probably because I felt very comfortable in its Melbourne style.

Finally, the very new (open about two weeks when I was there) Foxcroft and Ginger makes splendid coffee (below). The fitout was still being completed but the London food bloggers are already on to it!

Another reason I liked these places was that none (as I recall) added a service charge to the bill. More on this tomorrow…

Oh, I adore those cinnamon-cardamom buns. I feel inspired to whip up a batch of them right now!

Welcome to Soho – Always hard to find coffee to match Fitzroy’s in Teabag Land, but you’ve managed to try most of the best local coffee haunts already. I haven’t reviewed it in detail, but I love those cinnamon scrolls too!

Thanks! I have lots more London posts to come. A lot of the places I have chosen to eat at are based on reviews from London food blogs like yours, so thanks for the good advice.
