London holiday – exploring Fitzrovia
I’ve been researching the ancestral home to discover the link between Fitzroy in Melbourne and Fitzrovia in London. The London area known as Fitzrovia (a name invented and acquired in the 1940s) was named after the local Fitzroy Tavern, which was built in the 1880s. Wikipedia says that the tavern was ‘named either directly or indirectly for the Fitzroy family, Dukes of Grafton, who owned much of the land on which Fitzrovia was built.’ One descendant, Charles Augustus FitzRoy, was Governor of New South Wales in 1846-1855 and Fitzroy was named after him. Fitzroy and Fitzrovia should become sister suburbs! It’s a fascinating area with great restaurants and art deco architecture.

This is what I’ve been waiting for the London-Fitzroy connection..isn’t that why you went? Shame we haven’t got a Fitzroy-named pub in 3065 or 3068 pub in Fitzroy. So does it have a similar feel to here?

Fitzrovia has a cool little section with lots of restaurants, but it is definitively not like Fitzroy in that everything is closed on a Sunday (feels like Perth). Had to walk all the way south to Soho to find a decent breakfast!

@ brian: Fitzrovia, London, UK is quiet on the weekends and has lots of quiet streets during the week. That’s a part of it’s charm and why I’ve lived here for nearly 18 years. It’s a nice mix of residents (aobut 7,000 people), offices, shops, cafes and restaurants. Lots of conservation areas and listed buildings but a bit short on greenspaces. But you can walk or cycle to pretty much anywhere in central London from here.
Our Neighbourhood Centre has been here since the mid-1970s where we do a variety of things including a drop-in advice and information service and publish a neighbourhood newspapaer.
