London holiday – lunch at Kitchen W8, Kensington

Having been introduced to the concept of ‘modern British‘ food at The Commoner on Johnston St, I have been keen to see what it means in London. Several positive reviews suggests a relatively new restaurant just off the Kensington High St called Kitchen W8 was worth trying, and I found the £19.50 3 course set menu lunch (plus £6.75 for a glass of Portugese red wine) to be excellent value because the food is glorious. From the top down: salmon rillette and cucumber jelly, rump of veal with polenta and vegetables, and lemon curd beignets with berry compote.

The restaurant was nearly full with affluent locals. The couple beside me was celebrating the woman’s 30th birthday. On my other side, I learned that the middle aged couple had quickly become regulars. If I had the means, so would I, but in the meantime this lunch will remain a memorable holiday meal.

The service was efficient and not obsequious. Everything was calm, relaxing and pleasurable. Good food and wine really does sooth the spirit. After this fine experience I was ready to the return to the Victoria and Albert Museum with my energy restored and concentration refreshed.

As I’m travelling solo I’m obviously eating alone, which is sometimes inconvenient. Depending on where you go, you can be treated very well or rather neglectfully. In a recent Guardian article, Jay Rayner says that ‘[t]he classier the restaurant, the better they are at entertaining the single diner.‘ Kitchen W8 is classy and I can say from experience that they treat solo diners well.
