I have not tried everywhere yet, obviously, but my early impressions of the coffee available on campus and in the immediate vicinity are mixed. Plush Fish on campus has many fans, and Momo Sushi on Swanston St made me a good coffee – better than I was expecting. Maybe there is some synchronicity between Japanese food and coffee? But the clear winner in my opinion is Kere Kere. Excellent coffee, nice people, muffins with berries and chocolate. It’s all good. Is there anywhere better?

Castro’s (between Physics and the Elizabeth Murdoch building) would have to be up there…although the changed ownership is struggling to live up to its former glory.

Kere Kere would be the best strictly on campus
Seven Seeds for anyone in the commerce or law buildings.
The place opposite near the ERC Library does good coffee (St Ali?) since it was refurbished last year.
Castro’s and the Thai joint in the Alice Hoy seem to have gone downhill a little of late

Like everyone else above I’d also recommend Castro’s for their many different styles of coffee, as well as for their far better seating arrangements (i.e. More seats, and if it’s cold or wet there are heaters and umbrellas!)
To break up the monotony though, I also suggest Rue de Bebelons near the corner of Little Lonsdale and Swanston. Coffee is usually pretty decent, dub records appear to be on constant rotation, and they’ve thrown up South American paraphernalia just to mix things up some more!

Yeah, well you should try the coffee at La Trobe Uni. It’s all crap! :o(

Kere Kere is possibly the best you can get on campus. The standard at Plush Fish has dropped a bit over the past few years so I don’t go there anymore.
I work along Swanston St and I frequent Momo Sushi quite often. The guy is really passionate about his coffee and they apparently use Five Senses Coffee. Really good and fresh sushi too!

I tried Castro’s, but was not impressed. Kere Kere is still my favourite.

Depending where you are at Melbourne Uni, Tre Sette on Bouverie St, between Queensberry and Pelham is also very good for coffee. Nice and close to the Melb Uni buildings on Qberry.
