word on a wing

This is the other Urban Cake Lady work in Fitzroy. It’s on Argyle St east of Brunswick St. See the other works here and here. This one makes me think of the David Bowie song ‘Word on a wing’, which opens with the line ‘In this age of grand illusion you walked into my life out of my dreams’. It suits the dreamy fairytale nature of these images perfectly.

rotting away for 60 years

Like the Kitten of doom, I am fascinated by abandoned buildings. The one behind the Vegie Bar on Rose St is for sale after being held by the current owner for over 60 years. Judging by the debris in the building, visible through a broken side window, it has been sitting vacant for most of that time. Some materials on the far side appear to have rotted into unidentifiable matter, though more recent plastic bags are also scattered about.…

People and Planet exhibition opens today at Little Creatures

People and Planet is an organisation based in Fitzroy that raises funds for and supports the work of Australian environment and social justice organisations. Each year it publishes a diary and a calendar featuring images of people and places around the world. In 2010 People and Planet is having its first exhibition, which will be held at Little Creatures on Brunswick St from today to October 10 as part of the 2010 Melbourne Fringe Festival. All the photographs will be for sale, with proceeds to be donated to the purchaser’s charity of choice from among their network of partner organisations.…

Us by Grit Theatre at the Fringe Festival

I enjoyed Grit Theatre‘s performance of their play The Unexpected Passage of Time Within a Confined Space earlier this year and I’m planning to attend their new work Us, which is being performed at the same space on Smith St as part of the Fringe Festival. It opens tomorrow night and runs until October 9.

Us is a party. Us is your weekend off. The hour on the phone with a friend. The walk of shame on Sunday morning.…

what is an advertorial blog post worth?

A year ago I wrote about the ethics of publishing sponsored reviews, and I have been watching developments closely since then. Following up from my recent post when bloggers sell out audiences stop reading, I’ve been doing more research about the economics behind the commercialisation of blogs and the ‘sponsored’ advertorial or infommercial content that commercialised blogs publish.

There’s not much information around but what I have found is sufficiently interesting to warrant further discussion.

tell me where to go – dinner at the Worker’s Club

The September ‘tell me where to go’ winner, with 42 of the 160 votes, is the Workers Club on the corner of Brunswick St and Gertrude St. I visited on a Thursday night with a friend and we enjoyed an excellent meal. My friend loved her salmon and noodle salad and I was very satisfied with my goulash with nokedli and sour cream.

Magic Lantern Studio opens on Brunswick St

In July 2009 I reported that a new business called Magic Lantern Studio would open on Brunswick St. In November 2009 I reported that they had a sign on their door saying ‘opening soon’. But the door remained mysteriously closed. The mystery was resolved last week when owners Lucy and Gonzalo held a well attended opening soiree on Wednesday.
