lunch at Casa Iberica on Johnston St

I had a conversation with a friend recently about my 5 favourite places in Fitzroy. I’m not sure I ever made a definitive list but Casa Iberica is on it. When I occasionally don’t know what to cook I go there and buy random ingredients, which always inspires me. Although you can’t actually have lunch at Casa Iberica, locals will know that you can buy freshly made rolls to take away for lunch. $8.50 buys a large ciabatta filled with jamon, cheese, olives and fresh tomato.

The difference between this and most other takeaway rolls is the quality of the ingredients – good Spanish jamon and manchego cheese with firm pitted green olives (hidden under the jamon). You really can taste the difference. Once you’ve had one of these, you won’t want a sandwich from anywhere else in Fitzroy.

  1. Which is the way sandwiches are prepared in most Mediterranean countries…with the ham or cold meat sliced on demand….the practice of pre-slicing ham or any other cold meat and then leaving it to dry for hours (if not days) in a display counter is just madness and it happens in Melbourne from the (pseudo)authentic delis at Vic Market to the humble supermarket counters. And I love the offer of olive oil poured on the bread (if you so wish)..;-)

  2. Love their Portuguese tarts too!

  3. Was there today to stock up on some amazing, fresh ingredients and indulged in an incredible chorizo empanada! Then we took it all home to cook up the best paella I’ve ever thrown together, sat down on the couch with my husband to wolf it down, tried to balance the bowl on my knee to reach for my sangria, and promptly spilt half of it all over the floor. Luckily my eyes were bigger than my stomach and I made enough to feed me twice! Great place though :)
