Fitzroy history – looking west on Gertrude St

This picture shows the view from the corner of Young St and Gertrude St looking west past Brunswick St to Nicholson St and the Exhibition Building in about 1890. I really like photos like this that I find that show the section of Gertrude St lost more recently to the Atherton Gardens public housing estate.

  1. Thanks Brian: I’ve heard about the (now demolished) shops across the road from Circa but this is the first time I’ve seen them. It’s hard to imagine having such a different view from the grass and trees that’s there now.

You’ve also captured my van, parked out the front of Circa in the loading zone, and in front of it is the van from my neighbour Mr Lincoln.

The building that houses both our shops isn’t in your top photo, but I think it must have been built soon after because it shows signs of being Victorian or Edwardian. Totally modernised now of course, which is a pity because I’d love the character.
