Enjoy this view while you can. The boarding house known as the Hub on Nicholson St may soon be demolished and replaced with 51 residential units. According to the Fitzroy Residents’ Association, the plans don’t include car parking or even clothes lines for the residences. The demolition application was disputed by the City of Yarra, which also failed to respond within the required 60 days, and the applicant planned to take the case to VCAT in November. I don’t know what the current status of the proposal is.

Are you sure it’s to be demolished? Surely they’ll retain the facade? Surely the building itself is heritage listed? How do developers get away with this shit? They’ll probably throw up some prefabbed “Made in China” bollocks that’s totally out of sync with the nearby architecture and further dilutes Melbourne’s historical identity…makes my blood boil.
Have you noticed lately that new apartment blocks are all perverse Lego monstrosities with no aesthetic value whatsoever? Destined for a speedy and shabby concrete cancer death within about 20 years? Short-term greedy bastards. Melbourne; the new, even shonkier, suburb of Beijing.

I can see that! I could not find the planning application on the council site so I am not sure of the details.

I lived there years ago in 1990 and it was not to spectacular, though it does have certain charms. and the front has a beautiful view.

Davy,
From my experiences I have learnt that there is one set of planning codes for developers and another for commoners, especially where City Of Yarra is concerned.
