I was talking not so long ago with a local acquaintance about the quality of some Fitzroy cafes that have changed ownership, and whether they are as good as they used to be. I thought the quality of the coffee at Newtown SC declined after Cate sold up. He replied by questioning whether Ici was still awesome after its rumoured change of owners in 2010, and I said I have not been there for some time.

Then a friend rang, announced she was walking in my direction and wanted coffee and entertainment. I suggested we retire to Ici for lunch (her) and breakfast (me). She reported that her trout sandwich was entirely satisfactory, but it did not make for an enticing photo. My autumn eggs (toast, hommus, poached eggs, spinach, chili tomato relish and dukkah) was sensational and pretty too. Similar to the eggs at Bluebird and equally delicious. So Ici is still awesome, and I’m relieved to now know it!

I’ve been going to Ici for years back to when Lou owned it. The new owner Bill has retained all the good barristas and has a seasonal menu plus the usual favourites. The coffee is (as it always has been) is amongst Brunswick’s best.
