Hyperlocal news about Melbourne's first suburb: Fitzroy 3065

opening night

This is the queue of people waiting to enter Mana Bar on Brunswick St yesterday evening on its opening night. Its marketing has evidently been most successful, but like some I find their Wikipedia vanity page distasteful. They sent a press release out by email on 29 June, and the Age and the Sydney Morning Herald dutifully ran it the next day as a news article. Seeing Fairfax being spammed is amusing but it demonstrates the extent to which commercial media is dependent on supplied content that is not really news.

  1. So good to see. It’s a real hit in the Valley in Brisvegas.

  2. What specifically do you find distasteful about the wikipedia page?

    • Most people view Wikipedia as an informational space, not a marketing space. The Mana Wikipedia page uses the same language as your press releases, and appears to be written as a marketing tool. The contested nature of the page reflects the view that it is not a legitimate informational page.

You probably know that Wikipedia pages generally have good SEO, so a thorough online marketing campaign may include creating a Wikipedia page for SEO purposes. In this instance it seems greedy, selfish and distasteful because it makes inappropriate use of Wikipedia.

You have a website and a presence in other social media platforms to promote your business to potential customers. Using Wikipedia as well seems desperate and unprofessional.

  3. Went there on Friday while I was waiting for the LuWOW to open (second time in two days, long story), I found it a bit cold and sports bar like. Won’t be going back.
