dinner at Taqueria, Notting Hill

I ate Mexican at Taqueria in Notting Hill last night, which is similar in concept to Mamasita in Melbourne – smart upmarket modern Mexican. I sat in the window looking out onto the street, drank my hibiscus drink and nibbled on chilli roasted peanuts. Jeremy Clarkson from Top Gear shuffled past looking grumpy.

endings and beginnings

This story has been embargoed for 6 months at the request of the protagonist, and names have been changed. It is another true story from my tragicomic rom-com life. The scene is a fashionable pizza restaurant. A voluptuous woman sits at the bench in the window watching the street life. I enter, and ask if the seats near her are taken. She says she is being joined by one person and there is plenty of room for me.…

goodbye Bottegon, hello Richmond Seafood Tavern

The tenure of Bottegon on the corner of Alexandra Parade and Rae St in North Fitzroy must have set a record for brevity prior to oblivion. It was there for about two months only – so brief a time that although its domain name was registered they never got round to publishing a website. In a space that is becoming an obvious restaurant black hole, another business is now open there – the Richmond Seafood Tavern – that has relocated from Richmond.…

the toilet etiquette of suits

I’ve just finished a contract job at a large business in the city. It was the most corporate environment I’ve ever worked in and, consistent with the foreignness of that to me, many of the behaviours of the suits there were equally confusing. Lots of people there make lots of money, and they certainly behave like they think they rule the world.

Consider the toilet etiquette of the male suit. I cannot describe that of the women, of course.…

Merri Table and Bar at CERES has closed

My attention was piqued by Cindy and Michael’s tweet about finding the Merri Table and Bar at CERES closed tonight when they went for dinner. I’ve enjoyed a few meals there and thought it had great potential, but it didn’t seem to build momentum and a reputation. Once I read the tweet I went to their website and social media platforms seeking information. The CERES website states that it has closed indefinitely and will be used as a function venue for group bookings.…

why do they always want to cum on your face?

Best sms ever. Seriously, I didn’t make this up. The question comes from a straight woman friend of mine. She’s smart, articulate and sexually confident. She finds it difficult to meet men she likes because so many straight men are stupid, lazy, sexist idiots who are scared of strong women.

We we talking at drinks in a group consisting of her and gay and straight men and we were joking that her circumstances are similar to those of straight men, who are rarely able to get enough sex because (I acknowledge this is a broad generalisation) many straight women are not as motivated by sex as men.…

Expedia and Melbourne Gastronome’s plagiarised food blog content

Melbourne Gastronome, published by Claire, is one of the best food blogs in Melbourne. It is widely read and influential. If you wanted to steal and republish some good Melbourne restaurant reviews, complete with photos, this is one of the sites you’d choose to steal from.

A site called Melbourne Tips, which links to expedia.com.au (an Australian domain version of a terrible American travel site) and uses a template adapted from another Australian Expedia site, publishes text and images plagiarised from Melbourne Gastronome.…

tessellation

The new apartment building on the corner of Gore St and Rose St is taking shape. The plans require that the original factory wall be retained, but sections have been knocked out to facilitate construction. Now some of those sections have been rebuilt but, in the process, bricks have been reused and rearranged. The result is that the remnants of paint from street art have been fragmented and now form an abstract decoration that is most pleasing to the eye.…
