Christmas lights in Subiaco

My friends at VJ Zoo did a big Christmas projection in Subiaco in Perth, which included projecting drawings made by children from the local primary school. These are three of the best drawings: alien santa, crack santa and santasaurus.

Cruzao is closing on Sunday

According to their site, Cruzao is closing after their final trading day on Sunday 30 December. It’s been an interesting feature of Brunswick St for the past two and a half years. Initially I liked it but their propensity for ridiculously slow service made me choose to frequent Sonido instead.

In 2011 they were offering meals via discount vouchers, and numerous diners complained about the slow service, which they felt undermined their capacity to enjoy the supposed ‘all you can eat’ offer.…

stay classy East Victoria Park

I have revisited the suburb of my youth, East Victoria Park in Perth. While many things have changed, and gentrification is underway (sadly thirty years too late for my liking), many things remain familiar.

The main street through the suburb, Albany Highway, used to be a wasteland of car yards and gangland kebab shops with a few Chinese restaurants. It’s now far more cosmopolitan, with apartment buildings on many of the sites of the former car yards, and many more cafes and restaurants.…

legal deposit and other archaic laws vs the future of publishing: ebooks and print on demand

The Copyright Act 1968 requires all publishers to lodge a copy of every printed book to the National Library of Australia (NLA) and their relevant state library. This is called legal deposit. Print on demand is considered a form of print and thus legal deposit is required. ‘Published’ simply means ‘made available to the public’ (regardless of whether it is free or at a cost).

Electronic publications (that have no physical form, such as ebooks, though not those distributed on physical media like CDs) are not covered by the current Act, and this means that legal deposit is not required for them, though it is being planned for.…

the colours of Byron Bay

I visted Byron Bay recently for the first time and loved the beach and the colours of the place. From the top down: the lizard living in the garden of our rented apartment, main beach, breakfast at the Byron Beach cafe behind Clarke’s beach, a ladybug, felafel and hummus from Orgasmic foods on Bay Lane, bikes and beer are two of the most common things in town, a plum coloured Renault 12 (definitely not an original colour) and delicious old school pizza with wholemeal bases from Earth ‘n’ Sea on Byron St.…

2013 Fitzroy pubs calendar available now

Each year a group of Fitzroy drinkers puts together a Fitzroy pubs calendar as a fundraiser for the Fitzroy Learning Network. You can buy a calendar from many Fitzroy pubs including the Napier, Rainbow, Commercial Club, Tramway, Labour-in-vain, Rose, Newry and Fred’s Bar (in north Carlton). Last year the calendar made $3500 for Fitzroy Learning Network.
