Fitzroy history – a truly impressive moustache

This photo shows Fitzroy entrepreneur Macpherson Robertson being welcomed home to his factory by some of his staff after returning from a trip to Europe in 1935. The startled look on the face of the man on the left hand side makes me think he is saying ‘what, they don’t have Freddo frogs in France?’

I admire millionaire polyamourists like Robertson for their lifestyle, especially if they are self-made, if not their business ethics or taste in partners (Richard Pratt).…

dinner at Killiney Kopitiam, Lygon St Carlton

The Killiney Kopitiam opened late last year in the cluster of inexpensive eateries on Lygon St near the corner of Queensbury St. Cold kopi on a hot day is divine and theirs is delicious. As a lover of the nasi lemak, I had to try the nasi lemak complete on my first visit. The curry is wonderful but very mild, as was the sambal. I was expecting a bit more chilli heat. I liked the fried fish and the generous amounts of anchovies and peanuts.…

two Brunswick St closures

Souvlaki King and the nonedescript place over the road in the BSG building both closed recently, leaving Sonsa and Lamb as the late night food survivors. It can be very busy on weekends and, while I won’t queue for any length of time, I will sit and have a coffee and a croissant when I am told at the start that the kitchen is queued up and orders will take some time. The staff are organised here.

A couple of weeks ago ‘the’ (not ‘my’) girlfriend (as she recently requested to be described) and I had another brunch there.…

lunch at Le Miel, Elgin St Carlton

Cindy and Michael beat me to it again! They published the first review of new Carlton cafe Le Miel a day before I went for lunch. In the space of the former What about food, and with no external signage, Le Miel opened recently and has a small but tempting menu.

I met a friend there for lunch. As a vegetarian, she had only one choice – petite pumpkin tarts with a green salad ($9.50), which were reported to be good.…
