One of my favourite shops on Smith St, Sonsa, is soon to open a new shop a bit further north on the same side of Smith St. It’s great to have somewhere within walking distance that is effectively a mini Sydney Rd.

Fitzroyalty is sometimes deliberately confrontational and does not shy away from direct and uncompromising discussions about topical local issues. This inevitably causes conflict, and Fitzroyalty is a site that allows a significant degree of disagreement in the comments.

The space of the former shortlived Rhombus surf shop has become Martha Ray’s, a cafe serving coffee, all day breakfast dishes and delicious rolls such as this pork belly with cabbage and apple slaw (below). My friend and I slipped in for lunch just in time, as people flowed in immediately after us and the narrow space was soon completely full.

It looks like the Gypsy bar on Brunswick St has closed. Weeks of mail and street press on the floor mingle with leaves coming in under the door. A decade ago, it was an intimate place for a drink or dinner. More recently it had sadly declined, with its last effort as a cheap lunchtime cafe being particularly underwhelming.

While I’m primarily a coffee drinker, I do have tea drinking friends and am willing to accompany them to drink things other than coffee, including tea at Storm in a Teacup. Located in the former Trippy Taco premises on Smith St, Storm in a Teacup is specialty tea cafe (albeit one that does serve coffee) that also makes fantastic cakes, including pear and red velvet.
I enjoyed my earl grey with lemon. The service is friendly and welcoming and the interior is lovely, light and bright with pastel green shelves and bar seats with lightning bolt shaped bases (see bottom photo).…
