The space of the former shortlived Rhombus surf shop has become Martha Ray’s, a cafe serving coffee, all day breakfast dishes and delicious rolls such as this pork belly with cabbage and apple slaw (below). My friend and I slipped in for lunch just in time, as people flowed in immediately after us and the narrow space was soon completely full.

The popularity is due to three reasons. First, it’s new and people are curious. Second, the coffee is very good. Third, I’m thankful it was open on a Monday when nearby competitors like Slowpoke and Argos Loves Company were closed. My friend enjoyed her spinach omelette (below) but also commented that she’d had something similar and better at the Auction Rooms in North Melbourne.

I think Martha Ray’s is another great addition to the south end of Brunswick St, an area that will look even better once the new addition to Atherton Gardens is finished.
