Smith St in the 1960s

Artist Anne Warren is interested in photos of people in Smith Street (Fitzroy or Collingwood) around the 1960s. She is working on creating works for an art exhibition in September at a Collingwood gallery.

She says she remembers the street so well in the 1960s for its crowds of shoppers, the long queue for the butcher and the blaring Greek music coming out of the music / furniture store prior to the creation of late night shopping.…

With the cold, wet and windy weather last week I wanted mountains of hot satisfying food for lunch, and Windsor can satisfy such cravings. Tyranny of Distance, just of Chapel St on Union St, makes a great burger (below) with masses of potatoes and a reasonable coffee. See reviews by Gourmet chic, Eat and be merry and The Chommery.

The only thing I don’t like is this trend away from chips. Like the fish and chips at the nearby Railway hotel, the meal came with potatoes that were not chips.…

one product, many prices

I spotted this last week at Coles on Johnston St: a brand of the painkiller and anti-inflamatory drug ibuprofen called Medi Choice. There are four varieties: 1 packet of 24 tablets (pain and inflamation) and 3 of gel capsules (1 of 20 for pain, 1 of 24 for migraine and 1 of 24 for period pain. The problem is the massive difference in price.

The gel capsules may be more marginally expensive to produce, but that does not explain the pricing differences here.…

In the past week I ate at another three places new to me with varying results. I enjoyed an excellent sandwich, with cold roast beef, cheese and coleslaw ($8.90), and good coffee at the Windsor Deli on Hornby St, and am likely to return. There’s a number of sandwiches on the menu and it’s away from the rush of Chapel St with a calm atmosphere.

analysing the BSC failure

Brunswick St Cycles shops closed during the week. The business appears to have suddenly collapsed, but I think that behind this the scenario was somewhat different. Reading the articles in the Age about it, a pattern of illogical capitalism emerges.

Cycling has become increasingly popular amongst the middle class as a form of transport and as a hobby, driven by such diverse forces as increasing traffic congestion and fuel prices, the need for sedentary office workers to get more exercise, and the coverage of cycle racing on SBS.…

the Australian Federal Police says threatening to make a denial of service attack is not a crime

Three weeks ago I wrote about an implied denial of service threat I received from a belligerent moron who failed to convince me that taggers are not morons. I followed the advice I received and reported the threat to CERT, who responded the next day and advised me to report the threat to the AFP.

I did so, and waited. And waited… Three weeks later I received a brief response. Either they are very busy or they don’t know or care about providing any kind of customer service.…

southside lunchings 1

I’ve got a new job located on the Windsor / St Kilda border, and consequently I am lunching around the south end of Chapel St. It’s not an area I spend much time in socially, so I’ve been wandering randomly and selecting places to eat at based on friends’ and online recommendations. I’m not planning on reviewing each in detail, but I will publish a single weekly summary of where I’ve been the week before.

I’ll start with the best lunch of the week, which was at Eugenius cafe on Hornby St.…
