Fitzroy history – from slums to park

This 1948 photo shows a row of slum houses directly opposite the Town Hall. It continues the view of Napier St from another photo I have previously published. It has helped resolve my confusion about Condell Park, which now occupies this space. My previous post about the park is now clearly wrong based on the timing alone, as this photo indicates that the park did not exist until after 1948.

  1. Your previous post about Condell Park might not be incorrect. Is it possible that the street appearing bottom left in that photo was a continuation of Wood Street onto Condell Street, that’s since been closed off? In which case Condell Park might have appeared behind this row of slum houses. It’s hard to tell, but it would seem odd for that street in your previous post to be Napier Street – a major thoroughfare – with the cobbles and drain across it, as it appears in that photo.
