Savanna is a new Ethiopian and Eritrean focused African restaurant on Johnston St Collingwood just east of Smith St (in the space of the former Porcini). My dining companion last night (a more glamorous hand model than the previous one) and I ordered a mixed platter for two that features a large plate containing injerra and various vegetable wat (like stews or curries) and which is accompanied by a serve of tibs (grilled meat).
This an excellent way to try all the various flavours on offer, as well as being excellent value at $37.50. I particularly liked the spinach and beetroot wat. A vegetarian platter and many dishes on the a la carte menu are also available. We also had lovely freshly prepared coffee.
Savanna is new and still finding its feet. It’s not competing in terms of sophistication but the welcome was genuine and the food is really good. It’s just across the road from Horn, which is long established and will pose a challenge for Savanna. One thing in Savanna’s favour is that it opens on Monday nights, when much of the Smith St precinct slumbers. I’m impressed with Savanna and urge you to try them.
