Hyperlocal news about Melbourne's first suburb: Fitzroy 3065

dinner at Basil Leaf Pho La Que

A few months back I was critical of the repeated rebranding of a Vietnamese restaurant on Brunswick St, and I was skeptical of whether the latest incarnation, Basil Leaf Pho La Que, could succeed. Readers gave it positive reviews and encouraged me to try it, and I’m glad I did because I was impressed by the food.

My dining companion and sought a light dinner after a busy day and a generous lunch, so we shared prawn rice paper rolls and each had a bowl of beef pho. The broth was full of flavour with no trace of MSG burn, the meat was tender and the basil and beanshoots fresh. They delivered everything you could want from pho.

I think it’s better than Mr Juice and Coconut Palms, particularly in the quality of the meat, and, at $9 for a quite large ‘medium’ bowl that I could barely finish, excellent value. Basil Leaf Pho La Que has improved on its predecessors and is definitely worth trying. Do they serve the best pho in Fitzroy?

  1. Sounds pretty good.

  2. We’ve eaten there a few times over the past few months, and have always been happy with what we’ve had. It’s not only by far the best of the Vietnamese restaurants in Fitzroy (not that that’s a huge compliment) but also as good as anything we’ve tried in Richmond. Its great not having to trek over there when we want a good Pho.
