Hyperlocal news about Melbourne's first suburb: Fitzroy 3065

dinner at the Bridge hotel in Castlemaine

I’ve been meandering around Goldfields towns with friends who are resident in the area, being taken out for lunch and dinner, and getting to know the area better. My latest meal was at The Bridge hotel in the west of Castlemaine away from the main drag. It’s a pub famous for being a live music venue but one that is also gaining a reputation for fantastic food.

I ate the pork belly burger with fennel slaw and fries, which was most enjoyable, but my friend ordered what may have been the best dish on the menu, the parma with housemade kangaroo ham. The parma itself was very good indeed but the salty gamey kangaroo ham was outstanding. There should be more of this. I got the impression the ham was made there but if not I’d like to buy some for home. With Woodend’s Holgate beers on tap and a large beer garden The Bridge is just about the perfect pub.

  1. Not sure about the origins, but Maria’s Coffee House in Carlton North now stocks a very good kangaroo prosciutto.
