Hyperlocal news about Melbourne's first suburb: Fitzroy 3065

goodbye Paradiso, hello Bad Frankie

After taking over this Greeves St location from the failed Felice’s, Bar Paradiso seemed to be doing well for a while. Perhaps it was a bit invisible and, with increasing choice becoming available as gentrification marches north on Smith St, the customers were simply not returning. Whatever the reason, Paradiso quietly closed months ago and the space is now Bad Frankie, a bar specialising in locally made spirits. It’s helpful to have a point of difference, and a night-time bar may fare better here than a daytime cafe. I wish them well.

  1. A shame. We used to really enjoy Bar Paradiso’s themed dinners which took place around 4 times a year, and enjoyed their tasty Sicilian style brunch menu which was very modestly priced. Having said that, they did always struggle to attract a crowd and didn’t seem to promote the place aggressively enough. It was owned by Freddie and Lisa who also own Bar Idda on Lygon St East Brunswick (same style of food, but focus on dinner) – Bar Idda is always packed out, so I can only presume the location and the (mostly) daytime only opening hours were the main issue for Bar Paradiso.

  2. I’m really hoping Bar Paradiso reopens soon on Smith Street (or nearby). It was such a great place – very sad to see it go.
