A reader alerted me to the painting of this house on the corner of George St and Condell St, so I went to have a look. It features a wall of worms similar to others that have appeared on walls in the inner city, including Northcote and Carlton, along with spaces for people to write short quotes. The best part is the inclusion of two Mishap figures. The worms are by Simz I think. Mishap was prolific early in 2009 but I have not seen any appear this year. I’m glad she’s back.

Fitzroy history – political street art c1979

This is a fascinating piece of local political history. Artist Jillian Viva Gibb made this poster c1979 in response to the Fraser federal government canceling funding for the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service, which was and still is located in Fitzroy. The accompanying notes state that this work was one of a series of posters inspired by newspaper headlines. They were not commissioned but were designed, printed and pasted up by the artist (perhaps in the Fitzroy area).

On the opening night of the Gertrude St projection festival I saw Mr Ghostpatrol out with friends enjoying the video art. Later, walking home on Smith St, I saw a group of people huddled against a wall then suddenly walk away towards me. Mr Ghostpatrol and Mr Fitroyalty passed each other with the merest hint of mutual recognition eye contact and I stopped to look at the paste-up the group had just put on the wall – two small citrus and cheese characters with glue glistening wet in the stark street light.

The launch of the Gertrude St projection festival at the Workers Club on Friday night was very well attended and the street was busy with people out to see the video art. It was amusing and intriguing to compare the overheard conversations of the people there to see the work and those who found it accidentally. It’s on nightly from 6:00pm – 12:00am until Sunday 18 July so come along and see it!

A Ghostpatrol pasteup on Gertrude St that I photographed two months ago has suffered an undignified fate. The Curve fashion shop has painted over their half of the work. A property owner of course has the right to do what they want with their property, but does this improve the look of their shop or not? I say not. The work of a well known artist, who the customers probably like, is better than blank walls and messy graffiti.

It’s a short-sighted and narrow-minded response that reflects poorly on the business. At least they should have consulted and worked with their neighbour to repaint their wall completely.

No, you’ve got it completely wrong, I expect people to say. You idiot, it’s for blind people to know where the footpath ends so they don’t keep walking into the street without stopping. I say you’re not interrogating the site with a sufficiently critical eye.

I say it’s a minimalist critique on the commodification of modern life. The uniform repetition of Lego style blocks in the footpath symbolises the tyrany of industry over the natural world and the lack of diversity in the urban environment.

window of the week – Gallery du Mont International, Brunswick St

A colourful display of works by artists # Dominic Kavanagh and Kristian Glynn are on display in the window of the old Gallery du Mont International building, now called Window 99, on the corner of Brunswick St and Palmer St. I saw it in the morning on my walk to work and stopped by again on my way home. While I was photographing it I could hear the clicking of an SLR from above: whether I was being photographed, or it was a recorded sound as part of the installation I could not tell.

Chapel St hipsterfest

On the evening of 29 April Chapel St was filled with hipsters drinking beer and standing around mostly ignoring each other. Some video art was being projected onto a wall opposite the host’s warehouse and there were a few new pieces of art on the external walls.

I was expecting more. The most amusing part of the evening was watching the door of the warehouse open briefly, allowing a few people to obtain what appeared to be free beers. The door would close again. Five minutes later it would open and freeloaders would rush the door.
