I visted Byron Bay recently for the first time and loved the beach and the colours of the place. From the top down: the lizard living in the garden of our rented apartment, main beach, breakfast at the Byron Beach cafe behind Clarke’s beach, a ladybug, felafel and hummus from Orgasmic foods on Bay Lane, bikes and beer are two of the most common things in town, a plum coloured Renault 12 (definitely not an original colour) and delicious old school pizza with wholemeal bases from Earth ‘n’ Sea on Byron St.…

Over the coming two weeks I’ll be featuring posts related to my summer holidays in the mornings, with Fitzroy posts in the afternoons. This is City Beach in Perth at about 10am on Monday 21 December 2009. Most people are still at work, there’s no fighting for car parking and there’s a decent break for body surfing. This is what summer in Australia means to me – swimming at the beach.

There are many places to see and stay when on Waiheke Island, and based on web information I chose Onetangi beach, on the central north coast of the island. It is quiet and a wonderful place to stay where you can fall asleep to the sound of the ocean, which for me is an incredibly relaxing thing.

When I went to Auckland recently I spent two days on Waiheke Island, which is about 40 minutes by ferry to the east of Auckland. It’s primarily rural and wine country, very touristy, with lovely beaches and a relaxed holiday atmosphere, though it is also a suburb of Auckland and people commute to the city from there by ferry every day.

One of the most beautiful places I went to in New Zealand recently was Muriwai Beach, on the west coast of the north island. The sand is the colour of milk chocolate from volcanic activity. In changable weather I could not resist a quick swim though the strong rip and wind meant I was the lone swimmer in the water, with only a couple of surfers nearby.

After enjoying a long swim and bodysurfing some perfect waves, I went for a walk and looked around.

There’s lots to see and do at Coogee. On Sunday morning the aircraft appoaching Sydney Airport to land were coming from the north-east and flying towards the airport, which is south-west of Coogee.

As they passed over the beach, a giant shadow crossed the water and sand. I went up to the cliffs above the beach to watch.…

Coogee is my favourite beach in Sydney; when I have the chance I’m always in the water. On Saturday I had lunch at A Fish Called Coogee. They have various fish, prawns and octopus, some plain, some marinated. You choose your fish, and have it cooked with your choice of sides, such as chips, rice or bok choi.

I had sweet chilli blue-eye with bok choi wokked with soy and ginger. It’s more expensive than a traditional fish ‘n’ chips, but less than a seafood restaurant.…

I’ve spend the weekend in Sydney, mainly to go to the short film festival Flickerfest, but also to go to the beach. I’m staying at Coogee, but more about that later. I went to two sessions at Flickerfest – Australian program 4 and the Celebrity program. It’s held indoors (daytime) and outdoors (night) at the Bondi Beach Pavilion.

One of the films in the celebrity program was Bloodlock, directed by Nash Edgerton and staring his brother Joel Edgerton.…

The Rivermouth beach where the Margaret River (almost) meets the Indian Ocean is a fantastic beach. It is steeply sloped from the high tide point down into the water and becomes deep quickly. The conditions and swell make for great body surfing, boogie boarding and surfing. It can be dangerous to swim there (and signs indicate that swimming is not allowed) but when I have the opportunity I can’t resist body surfing the powerful waves.

When in the Margaret River region I stayed at the Bunker Bay resort near Dunsborough. It’s absolutely beautiful, with the most abundant native gardens I have ever seen. The beach at Bunker Bay is lovely too, especially by moonlight.

I miss few things about Perth. The beach is what I miss the most, and by that I mean being able to live 10 minutes away from a beach that is open to the ocean, with clear water and waves big enough to body surf and boogie board in. When I sat and watched the sunset at North Cottesloe beach recently, it reminded me of the beauty of the environment that I have also missed along with the activities I enjoy in that environment.…

Picture this: you’re on holiday in sunny Perth enjoying a couple of days catching up with friends. You’re staying at the Ocean Beach Hotel across the road from North Cottesloe Beach and fall asleep listening to the waves breaking on the sand.

While sitting above the beach watching the sun set over the Indian ocean on December 6 you’re buzzed by a RAAF Hercules at a height of about 200 metres. It’s coming from the south, dipping low from Fremantle and swinging left and right to hug the coastline north to Cottesloe and Swanbourne (where the SAS barracks are) and on to Trigg and Scarborough.…
