dinner at the Green Shed in Beechworth

For the curious diner, the Green Shed in Beechworth is an enticing proposition, with a menu offering a fusion of middle eastern and Asian flavours. On my recent trip to Beechworth for the Easter long weekend it was somewhere I booked for so I did not miss out.

Having eaten to excess since Friday night, by Sunday night we were beginning to order more cautiously. We were interested in the ‘feed me’ five course tasting menu, but we asked which dishes from the menu were included and it seemed to focus on the ones we found less desirable.…

lunch at the Bridge Rd Brewery in Beechworth

While my primary drinks interest is in wine, I also love beer, and a visit to the Bridge Rd Brewery in Beechworth is a great thing to do when in the town. They were full to bursting on Easter Sunday but the staff were prepared.

They informed us that the wait for food orders was about an hour, but we could get some bread and nuts quickly and they delivered on this. Unfortunately they also could not offer their small tasting glasses, due to the crowds, so the girlfriend and I only managed to try 4 of their beers, not the full set.…

dinner at Tanswell’s Commercial hotel in Beechworth

Unlike the Stanley pub, a gastropub that has full table service, Tanswell’s Commercial hotel in Beechworth is something of a fusion between the old style of pub and the new, where you order at your table but go to the bar for drinks. On a busy Saturday night, with the town full of visitors for the Easter long weekend, we were lucky to get a table.

The girlfriend bought a strangely cute pink knitted alien with a long flexible neck that encourages head bobbing at the craft market.…

Beechworth signs

The Easter long weekend in Beechworth offered many indulgences and amusements. First, in a town full of Ned Kelly references, Ned flouncing at tennis in what looks like a nappy had the girlfriend and I laughing hysterically on the side of the road.

breakfast at the Beechworth bakery

The morning after the night that I ate dinner at Gigi’s of Beechworth, I had breakfast with my colleagues at the Beechworth bakery. It’s the only place in town open early in the morning. We looked longingly in the smarter looking cafe windows but they must serve tourists who sleep in, not local workers who rise early. The food is good at the bakery but the coffee can only be described as ‘country’ – weak, milky and barely recognisable.…

dinner at Gigi’s of Beechworth

I was unhappy when I realised I would be in the country for work on a Monday when I wanted to go to Naked for Satan and eat 50c pintxos in the evening. But in making the best of what was available to me I enjoyed a fine dinner with colleagues at Gigi’s of Beechworth.

I’d been there 3 years ago for breakfast and enjoyed it, and with limited options on a Monday night Gigi’s is the best choice in town.…

breakfast at Gigi’s of Beechworth

After extensive wine tasting in Rutherglen and dinner at Warden’s in Beechworth on a Saturday night, I was surprised at myself in waking up the next morning feeling energetic and hungry. After a quick walk around Camp and Ford streets in Beechworth comparing cafes, bakeries and menus, we chose Gigi’s. The coffee was good and strong and the breakfasts were formidable.

wine victoria travel regional internet food customer service business beechworth

When choosing restaurants and accommodation based on their websites and third party reviews and recommendations, some interesting trends emerge. I’ve found that there is a high degree of correlation between a business with a great website and a business that provides great service. I’ve never been somewhere where their website was significantly better than their service. Many places with bad websites have equally bad service. It seems the effort required to have a good website is a reliable indicator of the effort required to deliver great service.…
