On the weekend I took my girlfriend to lunch for her birthday at the restaurant at Montalto winery on the Mornington Peninsula, which was recently voted the best of its kind in Victoria. It was absolutely wonderful. The appetiser was an espresso sized shot of a deliciously smoky potato soup.
I spent Saturday night in the 19th century assistant lighthouse keeper’s cottage (now the museum cottage) in the grounds of the Cape Schanck Lighthouse on the southern tip of the Mornington Peninsula.
You can stay there in any of three cottages if you want a unique and beautiful experience that reminds you what the world outside the city and the 21st century is like – absolute silence and almost total darkness at night, with the close but subtle sound of the waves crashing onto the rocks 80 metres below.
The cottage was cosy and comfortable though basic – a 19th century cottage that last saw a renovation in the 1940s. The experience was wonderful – being alone in the grounds and walking around the lighthouse and watching the ocean at night was remarkable and something I highly recommend.
