lunch at Go Hun Thai in Sydney

While on a quick trip to Sydney I ate at Go Hun, which is not an anti-German organisation but a busy lunchtime Thai cafe in North Ryde where I a surprisingly good lunch recently. My eggplant with basil and chicken mince and rice was under $10, quickly prepared and delicious. Most people get takeaway but there are a few bar seats inside as well. I don’t have anything else positive to say about North Ryde, but Food around Macquarie Uni also likes Go Hun.…

During my weekend in Sydney to see Brian Eno’s Luminous festival works I stayed in King’s Cross and revisited some old favourites for breakfast and dinner. It was sad to find that Dean’s on Kellett St is gone, but all my other usual haunts seemed to be thriving. As I was travelling alone, some places felt less suitable to visit solo, so I didn’t go to Kika or the Victoria Room (review by Citrus and Candy).…

Sydney lights

I had a wonderful weekend in Sydney recently attending the Vivid festival and in particular the Luminous strand featuring art and music by Brian Eno. I’ve never seen Circular Quay was busy as it was on the Saturday night. As well as the projections and the light installations, the light thrown by the projectors for Eno’s work was itself remarkable.

Sydney light installations

I did not have time to see all the ligt installations that were on the program at Vivid in Sydney, but I saw those closest to the MCA and Opera House. My two favourites were ‘Rainbow’ by Mark Hammer and Andre Kecskes (outside Billich Gallery in the Rocks, top three photos) and ‘Lumenocity’ by Sean Bryen, Sascha Crocker and Andrew Daly (at the Customs House Forecourt, bottom three photos).

the MCA projections in Sydney

Another highlight of the Vivid festival in Sydney, of which Brian Eno’s Luminous events were the major attraction, was the fabulous projection on the facade of the Museum of Contemporary Art by Electric Canvas, who also delivered the technology and infrastructure that enabled Eno’s ‘Lighting the Sails‘. The imposing art deco facade seemed to physically shift and morph as different themes drew attention to its angles and details.

‘Pure Scenius’ with Brian Eno, Karl Hyde and The Necks at the Sydney Opera House

Pure Scenius was the finale of the Luminous festival in Sydney curated by Brian Eno. It comprised three connected 90 minute improvised (though clearly rehearsed) performances of live music separated by 45 minute intervals. The concerts enabled people to attend one, two or all three performances; at least half (from what I could tell) selected all three.
