Marmalade and Soul in North Fitzroy has closed

Thanks to regular reader David for alerting me to the fact that Marmalade and Soul on Queens Parade in North Fitzroy closed around the time of the Easter long weekend. It’s been open for little more than a year and seemed to be doing alright, but evidently not.

The redevelopment of the former pub into a restaurant and apartments has been a slow process with the apartments yet to be finished. It’s not clear if the closure of the restaurant is related to its profitability or to issues with the broader development of the whole building.…

the Royal Derby has another makeover

The Royal Derby hotel on the corner of Brunswick St and Alexandra Parade had a very slick South Yarra style makeover back in 2008, which had no vibe and which obviously did not retain customers. It’s now closed and undergoing another makeover. I don’t know why they bother. With the ambiance killing road outside and its traffic noise, the building is no good for entertainment or occupation. It may be alright for offices but otherwise I can’t see it ever working.…

Thanks to a reader for sending me this photo of a stuffed penguin on the swings at the park on Alexandra Parade next to the Fitzroy swimming pool. S/he needs a friend. Going to the park by yourself is no fun…

goodbye Ink, hello Bottegon

Ink seafood restaurant, on the corner of Alexandra Parade and Rae St in North Fitzroy, closed a few months ago. When it first opened I thought it was excellent, but the psychological barrier that makes this location a patronage blackspot evidently tool its toll. I’m surprised therefore to see another restaurant trying its luck in the same venue – surely this old pub should be converted into residences and let that be the end of it.…
