the colours of Byron Bay

I visted Byron Bay recently for the first time and loved the beach and the colours of the place. From the top down: the lizard living in the garden of our rented apartment, main beach, breakfast at the Byron Beach cafe behind Clarke’s beach, a ladybug, felafel and hummus from Orgasmic foods on Bay Lane, bikes and beer are two of the most common things in town, a plum coloured Renault 12 (definitely not an original colour) and delicious old school pizza with wholemeal bases from Earth ‘n’ Sea on Byron St.…

dinner at Lime 303 in Albany

This is a difficult review to write. I want to like places and I rarely write negative reviews. It’s easier to simply forget bad meals. Sometimes, however, there is something to learn from in reflecting on disappointing dining experiences.

Having read reviews about restaurants in Albany prior to visiting, and having a recommendation from a friend who had eaten there previously, I chose Lime 303. It’s located in the generically mediocre looking Dog Rock motel, and features a standard contemporary restaurant interior including dark furniture, architectural light fittings and relatively dim lighting.…

lunch at Kailis Brothers in Perth

I was living in Leederville when Kailis Brothers opened their fish market and restaurant on Oxford St, and at the time it was an exciting addition to the compact Leederville precinct. When visiting Perth recently en route to Albany to attend a wedding, and with the intention of introducing some Perth and Melbourne friends, all of whom love seafood, Kailis seemed the perfect venue for lunch.

Our group of five ordered a series of plates to share.…

breakfast at Vancouver Cafe in Albany

While in Albany over the weekend I enjoyed a very good breakfast at Vancouver cafe with friends. After a terrible coffee experience at another Albany cafe (for unknown reasons, cafes in WA routinely turn anything called a latte, flat white or even macchiato into a huge hot milkshake with a mere hint of coffee), I warned fellow visitors to order their coffees with less milk than they would usually have in Melbourne to compensate. Vancouver did better than most but I ordered espresso just to be safe.…

a visit to Oranje Tractor organic winery, Albany WA

Over the weekend I was fortunate to visit the cellar door of Albany organic winery Oranje Tractor, and I was impressed with their wines. While the sparkling riesling, made by méthode champenoise, was not to my taste, I thought their riesling, sauvignon blanc and shiraz were excellent.

The sauvignon blanc is delicious with fish, while the typically cool climate peppery shiraz matches well with roast lamb and vegetables and crusty bread. If you’re in the area I recommend a visit to try their wine and to appreciate their wonderful gardens.…

dinner at the Green Shed in Beechworth

For the curious diner, the Green Shed in Beechworth is an enticing proposition, with a menu offering a fusion of middle eastern and Asian flavours. On my recent trip to Beechworth for the Easter long weekend it was somewhere I booked for so I did not miss out.

Having eaten to excess since Friday night, by Sunday night we were beginning to order more cautiously. We were interested in the ‘feed me’ five course tasting menu, but we asked which dishes from the menu were included and it seemed to focus on the ones we found less desirable.…
