Despite having Albert St Wine and Food on my list of places to eat at for months, I was not planning on going there on Saturday. I was trying to take the girlfriend to lunch next door, at Greenfield, a cheap and cheerful Vietnamese that comes recommended from friends. We’ve tried repeatedly to go there but we’ve failed.
We tried one Sunday (they’re closed) and on Saturday we arrived just after 12.30pm (they supposedly open at 12.30pm) but a staff member was loitering in the doorway, locked out.…

The Sporting Club hotel in Brunswick seems like a great place. I met a group of friends there recently on a Tuesday night for the $12 all you can eat paella special. It’s a good paella mixta with a reasonable amount of fillings, including chorizo, chicken, mussels and pippies. I’m keen to try the diverse menu on other nights, and there’s lots of different spaces in this large pub. It’s a good place for groups.

It’s been quite some time since my last visit to Court Jester in Brunswick, and since then some new dishes have appeared on the menu, including (from the top down) the boleks sandwich containing smoked salmon and Russian potato salad and ‘the bun formerly known as the worker’s roll’, which is a beautiful monstrosity. It contains capsicum chutney, sliced and roasted capsucum and zucchini, Polish sausage and cheese that is melted under a griller.

Last week I had dinner with a friend at the Alasya Turkish restaurant on Sydney Rd, Brunswick. When I began writing my review several days later, which always includes searching for previous reviews, I was horrified to learn that I had unknowingly chosen a restaurant that was responsible for poisoning hundreds of customers in 2005. In 2006 the owner pleaded guilty to 11 breaches of the Food Act and was ordered to pay a $40,000 fine plus $42,500 in court costs.…
The communal tables at Court Jester cafe in Brunswick are strewn with textas, colouring books, magazines, newspapers and tools for carving directly into the table, and someone has carved ‘pole fetish’ into the table. Maybe they like strippers, but it’s more likely they’re obsessed with Court Jester’s excellent Polish food. I definitely am. Last time I was there with a friend we ordered the Jester’s lunch (kreplakh and Russian potato salad) and cabbage rolls. We’re so in love with these that we ordered the same again this time.…
In recent months I’ve written critiques of a series of different websites, including traders’ associations, local guides and more local guides. This post will examine and compare the 8 local government sites (listed below) that cover approximately the same geography as the 10 local news sites I publish for inner city Melbourne.
Councils deliver many essential services to ratepayers and local residents, such as building roads and operating libraries, but they don’t identify the delivery of news and information as an essential community service or devote adequate attention to it.…
