Black Fella White Fella book launch at the Melbourne Museum

One Day Hill is a small, independent publisher based in Collingwood and works with Aboriginal authors and communities to promote their stories and cultures. Many of their books are children’s books, and they are often managed so that a percentage of profits goes back to communities.

The children’s book Black Fella White Fella, from the song by Neil Murray, will be launched at 10:30am Wednesday, 18 July, at the Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre at Melbourne Museum.…

lunch at Middle Fish in Carlton

Since reading Melbourne gastronome‘s review of Middle Fish Thai in Carlton I have been plotting a visit. I went on a recent weekday for lunch and was lucky to get the last of the small barrel tables. Behind me, several groups of four queued for larger tables. Middle Fish is so popular right now.

I enjoyed the Pad kha-na moo kob more than They call me Maggie, who notes that this dish is very similar to the Pad gapao moo kob that Ms I-Hua also found very salty.…

lunch at Seasons Provedore, Lygon St carlton

On first impressions, it’s not easy to know what to make of Seasons Provedore on Lygon St. It’s in an area surrounded by generic food for tourists, and is an area I can all too easily walk through without stopping until I get a bit further south to enjoy lunch at somewhere like Namaste or its neighbours.

But Seasons does not seem as soulless as its neighbours, and I enjoyed a coffee and some spinach and ricotta cannelloni there recently.…

dinner at Killiney Kopitiam, Lygon St Carlton

The Killiney Kopitiam opened late last year in the cluster of inexpensive eateries on Lygon St near the corner of Queensbury St. Cold kopi on a hot day is divine and theirs is delicious. As a lover of the nasi lemak, I had to try the nasi lemak complete on my first visit. The curry is wonderful but very mild, as was the sambal. I was expecting a bit more chilli heat. I liked the fried fish and the generous amounts of anchovies and peanuts.…

lunch at Le Miel, Elgin St Carlton

Cindy and Michael beat me to it again! They published the first review of new Carlton cafe Le Miel a day before I went for lunch. In the space of the former What about food, and with no external signage, Le Miel opened recently and has a small but tempting menu.

I met a friend there for lunch. As a vegetarian, she had only one choice – petite pumpkin tarts with a green salad ($9.50), which were reported to be good.…

lunch at the Prince Alfred hotel in Carlton

The Prince Alfred may not be the most exciting pub (during the daytime at least), but in my limited experience their food is rather good and very fresh. My fish and chips and salad last week was just about perfect: crisply battered fish, hipster chips not overly oily and crisp salad. Lovely.
